We've all got that lizard brain that throws us off our game once
in a while. There are times you get a sudden burst of energy or moment
of inspiration that causes you to act; to try and do something amazing
with your life. Maybe it's a great idea that creeps into your mind; a
thought that causes excitement and motivates you to be bigger and better
than you already are. How long does that inspiration last? How far are
you able to come before giving up?
If you're like most people, that sudden burst of energy does not last forever. A couple days after an idea appears it fades away. You are overcome with a sense of fear and your head fills with thoughts about why your idea won't work. You no longer have the desire to fulfill the goals you once decided to pursue. Sound familiar?
I face this all the time when I think about what steps to take to achieve my goals. What will other people think about my idea? Is pursuing my goal a mistake? It hasn't worked for me before, why should it work now? Is it even possible? Questions like these can cause us to doubt and eventually give up on our dreams. There must be a way to flip this scenario around and make life easier by resisting that lizard brain. How can you stay motivated? How do influential people and the leaders of this world stay consistent in their efforts to fulfill their vision?
For me the solution lies in two things:
1. First of all, staying motivated and active requires a certain amount of discipline. It is very difficult to resist negative self talk but it is not impossible. You need to resist your laziness and excuses about why something will not work and think about how it can work. Suck it up and keep going. This may not sound like easy advice, but what other options do you have but to stand up and fight?
2. This brings me to my second point. I stay motivated by reading books written by individuals who have already accomplished goals that I set for myself. Whatever your dream or idea is, chances are someone has already lived it and written about it. You want start a business online? Read online marketing blogs. You want become a successful marketer or entrepreneur? Read books written by men like Seth Godin and other people of influence in that area.
Nobody but you can stop you from doing something good with your life. It is necessary to keep yourself disciplined and motivated to fulfill your dreams. Sometimes it requires sacrifice and a resistance to self. Staying focused is hard work. Never forget that there are people here to help you. People that have already lived your dream have been kind enough to write about their experiences. Use their writing to your advantage. Keep pressing forward by acknowledging that you may fail but ultimately succeed.
