First, it must be understood that meditation has nothing to do with sitting in some awkard position and fixing your gaze unblinking at some object for any length of time. It has nothing to do in a belief in some deity or belonging to some religous order or cult, usually associated with the Oriental World. Not at all. Meditation has certain basic tenets, which if understood, mastered and applied, can bring you a life changing sense of wellbeing, physically and mentally and also in your broader social affairs.
Eckhart Tolle, in his enlightening book ,THE POWER OF NOW,explains in a clear way how one can meditate successfully. He says that everthing in life exists in the NOW - that, in reality, there is no time. The future and past are only an illusion of the mind. Of course we do utilise what we call time to make appointments and plan, but the past and the future exist in the great NOW.
Everything exist in the great NOW and for a person to come to this spiritual realisation, it is important to watch one's thoughts as though looking at a movie on a television screen without judgement. You must be fully aware of yourself and be alert to the present moment, at all the times of your wakeful state. This is something that the majority of human beings do not do. We are totally absorbed in our thoughts and wrongly identify with them. We are always consumed by our thoughts because we believe that they constitute who we truly are, which is not true. If we could develop the habit of always being fully conscious of our presence in the now, then we would be truly meditating.
You will agree with me when I say that most of the time we go about our daily activities not being fully aware of the present moment. For example, as you walk or drive to work, you usually do all these actions on auto pilot. You are not deliberately aware and conscious of every step you take nor are you conscious of the gear changes you make as you drive your car. You are semi- conscious, so to speak. Perhaps as you drive, you are thinking of what the boss is going to be up to today, or whether so and so will be as nasty as yesterday or some other thoughts which have nothing to do with your driving or walking. You may be perhaps worried about how you were unreasonably impolite toward your wife yesterday or concerned about something in the near or long term future. The bottom line is that you are not present. You are absent minded. You are either in the future or the past. This is how the majority of us think in a given day.
By learning to be deliberately conscious of what you are doing at all times is not an easy thing to do, but possible. The life long habit of always being concerned about the past or the future is not an easy one to bust.Yet it can de done. Herein lies the true power of meditation. At first you might feel as if you are abdicating your responsiblity by not thinking of the future or past. Yet once you start entrenching this habit of being always alert to the present moment, you will soon discover how things miraculously turn out in your favour without that stressful effort that is the daily experience of many people.
Your mental and physical health will take on a new and miraculous change for the better and your life will become more care free and yet paradoxically your personal affairs will tend to work out just fine. Meditation is actually surrendering your life to a higher and more powerful intelligence which knows exactly how to run your life in the most fruitful and successful way. Being acutely alert and consciuos of the present moment at all times, constitutes the true power of meditation, the benefits of which can truly enrich an individual's life beyond his or her wildest dreams.
